Namaste Asheganji,

I told you before. These guys dont like constructive criticism. They are like frogs in a well. What is the use of blowing a conch before a deaf person?

What can I say about people who thing jnana as an attribute of ahankara.

Ramesh

rameshji, i'm so disappointed... some of the most profound thoughts i've ever had in my short life were made on this board and the one on shuddhi... i wish i had saved them.. i'm sure you and other members would have loved to read them :((((

hopefully someday those ideas will resurface and i will be able to phrase them similarly...

god almighty grant some medha to those responsible... let there be good discretion in which posts are mercilessly deleted...

i'll be laughing if this post is deleted too..

I emailed the following message to the webmaster of this forum because I couldn't post yesterday. I would prefer if the webmaster responds here.

It is indeed very disappointing to see summary deletion of messages. This is ridiculous.

The Rules and "Netiquette" for this forum states,

When writing your messages, please use the same courtesy that you would show when speaking face-to-face with someone.

This may be a good suggestion but can't be considered a must for free discussion.

Flames, insults, and personal attacks will not be tolerated.

Handling of "Flames and insults" should be left to the participants and nothing should be done regarding "personal attacks" unless the affected participant openly expresses his/her objection, requests for actions and the responsible person fails to provide proper justification.

It's fine to disagree strongly with opinions, ideas, and facts, but always with respect for the other person. Great minds do not always think alike, and that's where the fun is!

This is spoon-feeding. In any case show of respect cannot be a must for expression of an idea.

Also, note that messages express the thoughts of the writers, not the board or its moderators.

Then let it remain so unless absolutely necessary.

I wish to highlight from the above that hitherto specified guidelines for this forum are insufficient. I very sincerely suggest that the administrators would state very clearly how they wish to conduct the discussions here. With the present level of interference from the administrators/moderators, this forum does not reflect Hindu tradition of freedom of thought and its expression.

Dear Jha,

There comes a time when verbal abuse and defamatory remarks undermine and degenerate the exchange of ideas. This is what had been taking place recently in several discussions on Hindu Universe Interactive. I think that the board moderators deleted the messages for that reason.

On many interactive forums, the moderator reserves the privilege to retain or delete messages at their discretion - you know this from your experience in posting on Moslem forums. Ultimately, that's what it comes down to on a moderated forum. For the sake of trust and accountability to forum members, it would be appropriate for the moderators to explain their actions.

Julie

Namaste Julieji,

There comes a time when verbal abuse and defamatory remarks undermine and degenerate the exchange of ideas.
How do you define a defamatory remark? Is opposing others considered defamatory? What can be more degenerating than making monkey out of a great Sanskrit scholar?
Is it defamatory to speak for the immutable laws of nature? Everything that eats should shit weather it is Ganesh or me. If it is wrong then please correct me. If I am wrong then I am ready to say that I am sorry.

This is what had been taking place recently in several discussions on Hindu Universe Interactive. I think that the board moderators deleted the messages for that reason.
How can people, who believe that reasoning as an attribute of ahankar, exercise reason?

On many interactive forums, the moderator reserves the privilege to retain or delete messages at their discretion - you know this from your experience in posting on Moslem forums.
Are you trying to say that there is no difference between a Moslem and a Hindu when it comes to suppression of freedom of expression?

Ramesh

Dear Julie Bahan,

I understand your opinion. I also understand that moderators do have the right/power to delete whatever they think is objectionable. However, I have following points to make.

Firstly, there is no dearth of forums on internet where people can freely criticize, fairly or unfairly, aspects of Hinduism. Why should participants on this forum seek a childlike protection from the moderators? And, why can't moderators wait for open suggestion from the participants before deleting messages?

Secondly, language and etiquette apart, Ramesh and other Arya Samajis do have a point in suggesting that portions of Puranas and many other scriptures sound irrational or outright ridiculous on face value. Now, either we should be able to explain the symbolism behind such seemingly absurd things or at least accept the possibility that such things may indeed be absurd. After all, if endless criticism of Smirti literature (f.e. Manu Smriti) can be considered intellectual and progressive, why not entertain criticism of any Puranas?

If the only way we can defend Hinduism in our own courtyard is by deleting and banning posts, I can't see how we can defend Hinduism in the forums where we are in minority and without any protection.

I don't mind deleting those posts that are more like a hit and run attempts. However, if someone is willing to pursue a discussion, we should not discourage it. That doesn't exclude the possibility of editing the posts of outright offensive language and suggesting the participant to use better language.

With the recent wholesale deletion of messages, I can't see why this forum should be considered any more open than those I have been banned from. I can't say that I have lost trust in the moderators but I am not feeling encouraged to post.

Regards.

P.S.: Please note that I am not upset for personal reasons. Not many of my posts have been deleted so far.

Namaskar,

Please note that none of the messages were deleted by anyone, admin or moderators. The messages were lost due to a problem in configuration (software + hardware). Please repost any message that had been lost.

My profound apologies for any missed post. We have already purchased a more advanced (and more expensive) software to manage the forums, which will eliminate these problems.

regards,

ajay shah

1. Due to server overload we had a server crash three days in a row, we are buying our second server

2. The user quota for hindunet on the server was set to 4 GB, which was exceeded we have bumped it by 50%.

3. The new software is mySQL and mod perl compliant, so it is very fast and also more reliable.

Respected Sri Ajay,

Thanks for the clarification. I am glad to find out that I misunderstood the situation.

May I suggest that a timely notification of any future software problem would be greatly welcome by the participant.

Best regards.

Namaskar Shree Jha,

I just found out about the problem yesterday and then spent good part of the day diagnosing it and fixing it.

But your point is very well taken. We will do our best to notify everyone as soon as we find out the problem.
