it is prophesied in some of the vaishnava texts that vishnu, the protector of righteousness, will incarnate a last time in this mahayuga (cycle of 4 ages) as kalkin 'the saviour'... i was once told that he'd return as a warrior brandishing a flaming sword and riding a white horse, to purge the world of the sinful, drive the barbarians from india and establish a divine rule over the earth... sounds a little like the second coming.. maybe that's where the christians got it from...

Raven, It is true that Sri Krishna Incarnates. Krishna (who is the Supreme Self) incarnates as the Animate & the Inanimate. The Kalki "avathar" is a very popular concept. But I cant find mentions of it in the Valmiki Ramayana, Bharatha or the Upanishads. I presume bhagavatham does mention it ( I am not sure - for I have not read it in original.) Mainly, The bagavath geetha does not mention Kalki as the Terminator (But mentions the ever present TIME to be the terminator.) Thus "Time" a.k.a Kaala (is none other than krishna). I dont think our Saints & Muni-vars (seers) waited in anticipation of a new Avathar. - I used to subscribe to Kalki avathar as a child.

Pundit: Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 1 Chap.3 Verse 25 "Thereafter, at the conjunction of two yugas,(end of Kali and beginning of Satya) the Lord of the creation will take His birth as the Kalki incarnation and become the son of Visnu Yasa (a learned brahmana in the village of Sambhala.) At that time the rulers of the earth will have degenerated into plunderers."
