I'm wondering if anyone can recommend an ayurvedic or similar cure for biological depression?

One has to chose the Right Physician as for as Ayurvedic Treatment for Mental Problems is concerned. The following suggestion is my personal opinion(because of my assocation as Deputy Director with Government of India Ayurvedic Central Research Council for 32 years-February 1965 to February 1997)--others may suggest other Physicians also.Kottakkal(Kerala- India)-Arya Vaidhya Saala chief Physician Dr.P.S.Warrior may be able to help you.I do NOT know whether they can completely cure "Biological Depression"-.There was One Vaidhya(Dr)Moosa and another Vaidhya (Dr)Dharisanamkoppu Mahadeva Iyer who were also specialising on this subject. Now for 3 years I have lost touch.I shall enquire from "Ayulink"- I get regularly their "On-Line" News-Letters (for Members) current position and let you know.

Thank you,

The request was not for myself, it was for a non-Hindu friend of mine. Though we both have depression conditions, I'm afraid his is far worse. I was hoping someone could recomend some form of treatment here, as I doubt that this person would be willing to see an Ayurvedic doctor (he is not a Hindu.) I would certainly like to contact this doctor for advice, if at all possible.

Thank you for your help,

Andrew

But Ayurveda is NOT meant only for Hindus. It is NOT a faith heeling. It is a Science.Ofcourse it is true Ayurveda developed as an Upaveda of Atharva Veda. But in its applications,it is Universal-cuts across Region/Religion.In fact out of my colleagues working in Ayurvedic Research 3 were Muslims (Dr.Mommin Ali/Dr.Usman Ali/Dr.Musaffar Alam)and 2 were Christians(Roman Catholic Nuns). If Ayurveda was a Religious Science they would not have selected this as a career. In the Ayrvedic Hospital to which I was attached,>60% patients were Muslims(because in the vicinity of the Hospital there were large Muslim Settlements). This is just by way of clarification.Hindus go to Muslim Hakims for treatment.

There is nothing wrong if someone is suffering from biological depression in the present day extremely fast paced world, specially living in these United States and Europe. There may be many causes, including genetic. Ayurvedic and homoeopathic remedies are preferable to modern medicine which have side effects and become addictive to the brain and body. Yoga, repetition of sacred mantras and meditation are also superior remedies since they curb the overactive machinations of the mind.
