There’s nothing more joyful than a trip to the temple. It was the autumn of 1999. Dad was behind the wheel of the car. Mom, sister and I made ourselves comfortable in the passenger seats. We were in search of the Hare Krishna Temple located in Schemerhorn street, Brooklyn, and with it the quest for spirituality. After a few wrong turns, we eventually made it to the temple. It was around 7 in the evening. A cool breeze whisked past us as we made our way to the temple.
Inside the temple, devotees clad in saffron-colored cloth greeted us with a smile on their faces and a chant of the glorious name of the Lord “Hare Krsna”. Next, we entered the divine inner sanctum of the temple. Inside, it was a totally different sight and an entirely different feeling. I, for one, was completely engrossed-body, mind and soul, in the scintillating music played by the devotees. I was in a state of ecstasy. I remember standing there dumb-struck, hairs on end; my body feeling cool and refreshed as ever. For a while, I couldn’t pay attention to anything else that was happening around me. After my state of ecstasy, I happened to pay heed to the surroundings. I noticed that the Lord’s beautiful music seemed to have an effect on everyone present. I looked around. I saw my parents and sister sitting on the floor singing and tapping their hands to the tunes; their eyes fixed on the devotees and their musical instruments. I saw a little child dancing happily on the floor. It wasn’t surprising to note that the wonderful music seemed to have a profound effect on the little girl. People of all ages, all ethnic backgrounds, men and women all seemed to enjoy the music. The fact seemed to be evident: Hare Krishna’s Door was open to one and all. There was no sort of a religious or ethnic difference as everyone was considered to be equal in Krishna’s eyes as well as in the eyes of His devotees. The faces of all the people present radiated calmness and peacefulness. No one showed the worries and problems that are very much a part of the outside world. Here, in the temple, it appeared that there was no place for such petty worries.
The devotees’ instruments were the traditional Indian instruments used to play Bhajans. They used the traditional Manjira (the hand-held cymbals), the Tabla (the traditional Indian drum), the Harmonium and the Flute. The music produced from all these instruments alongwith the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra and the fragrance of incense burning, was indeed, a reflection of the real spiritual world. Facing north, an idol of Lord Krishna and his eternal consort RadhaRani was placed. All devotees bowed to the Parents of the Universe and paid their obeisances. A devotee lectured on the soul, how it transmigrates from one body to another, its relationship with the Supersoul (Lord Krishna). Down south, a statue of Srila Prabhupada was placed. It appeared as though Srila Prabhupada was looking directly at Lord Krishna. Srila Prabhupada, founder of ISKCON (International Society for Krsna Consciousness of North America) was born in a strict Brahmin family in the Indian State of West Bengal. People were seen paying homage to the great soul.
Being in the Holy Shrine gave me a feeling of intense joy. For the people who were present there that day, it looked like there wasn’t a worry in the world for them; as for the devotees who lived there they hadn’t a worry AT ALL. The devotees are always in a happy state of mind and their faces seemed to radiate happiness, kindness and peacefulness. Such was the general disposition of the devotees. I was very impressed by their gentle demeanor and simple living.
After the divine musical presentation, devotees were led to the dining hall. There they were served the traditional Hare Krishna cuisine. The devotees happily indulged themselves in the delicious vegetarian food and satisfied their taste buds.
On our way out of the temple, we purchased the CD “Sounds of the Spiritual World.” One thing that needs special mention is the fact that the CDs are made by the devotees themselves.
On our way back home, we listened to the CD purchased. I could tell by the silence in the car that all of us were completely captivated by the harmonious rhythm of the music. I knew that everyone had a wonderful time; it wasn’t just wonderful but a rare experience. All of us were rendered speechless by the powerful and stunning rendition of the devotees’ singing. Thanks to Lord Krishna, I had a chance to enjoy His lively music, get a picture of the real spiritual world, and visit one of His many temples here in this material world. To me, it was the most enlightening, rewarding and refreshing experience I’ve had in my 22 years of life. It was a dream come true. Jai Sri Krishna!
I am hoping to put up a poem that was written especially for Lord Krishna....soon.... |
