ARTICLE : Mother
Goldie Hawn's documentary about Asian elephants (PBS,
October 12) is a brilliant display of reverence for
life. Her tribute to the goodness in it begins with the
worship of Ganesh Ji in a temple in Jaipur. Obstacles
removed, she journeys to the south and is introduced to
a beautiful elephant whom she learns to bathe and
accompany. But the touching climax is the meeting of
two mothers -- a blind elephant who is now rearing a
newborn calf, and Goldie herself. Tears flow,
confirming that the most powerful forces are nurtured by
emotion. Jai Maataa Kee!
