One of the reasons given for people not remembering their 
actions in their past lives is that the soul (jiva atma) is 
given an oppurtunity to start anew (a fresh leaf). It is given 
another oppurtunity towards attaining salvation (union with the 
Paramatma) without actually having to feel the burden of 
the good and bad actions from the previous births. (eventhough 
unknowingly it does carry the burden) (An act of compassion by 
the Paramatma)
