"Kumari" in the language of Tamil (official language of the state of 
Tamilnadu of India) means a young and beautiful woman. The goddess 
"Kanyakumari" is worshipped at the place Kanyakumari (southern most 
part of India). The significance of the name and plce is that the goddess 
in human form (unmarried and young and beautiful) is in the act of 
penance.
